What is Multi-Factor Authentication?

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a method to provide additional security for user accounts, in addition to password-based authentication and further secure Magic Links.

How MFA Works

MFA adds an additional step to the standard sign-in process.

Logging in Without MFA:

Without MFA, using a password:

  1. A user navigates to the sign-in screen

  2. The user enters a correct email address and password

  3. The user is successfully logged in and can continue to their account

Without MFA, using a magic link:

  1. A user navigates to the sign-in screen

  2. The user chooses the magic link option

  3. The user enters their email address

  4. The user receives an email with a time-based, secure login link

  5. The user clicks on the login link and is logged in and can continue to their account

Logging in With MFA

With MFA, the user logs in as normal with either method. However, prior to being logged in and continuing to their account, the user is sent a 6-digit code via SMS to the phone number they added to their account.

How to Set up MFA

1. Navigate to the Security screen under the User menu in the top-right corner.

2. Click the "Enable Multi-Factor Authentication" button

3. Enter your phone number. It must be capable of receiving text messages.

4. Enter the code that was sent to you.

5. Save your Backup Codes. Fidu will generate Backup Codes that will allow you to access your account in the event that you lose access to your phone number. Store these in a secure location, just like you would store a password. We suggest a password management tool like 1Password.

6. You're done!
